Common Vision Conditions
A guide to common vision issues treated at Shannon Vision Care in Allen.
There are many types of vision problems, also known as refractive errors, that can affect your eyesight. Below are the four most common refractive causes of reduced vision. These conditions, along with other eye health concerns, are diagnosed and treated with care and precision by the eye care providers at Shannon Vision Care in Allen, TX.
Myopia (Nearsightedness)
Nearsightedness, or myopia, is a condition in which near objects appear clear while distant objects look blurry. Myopia occurs when the eyeball is longer than normal or when the cornea has too much curvature, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than on it.
Myopia is commonly diagnosed during routine eye exams and can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, LASIK, or PRK. Your eye care provider will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your prescription and lifestyle.
Myopia in children is becoming increasingly common, particularly in today’s digital world. Fortunately, specialized treatments are available to help slow myopia progression in children, including MiSight® contact lenses and Stellest™ glasses. Please visit our Myopia Management page to learn more.
Hyperopia (Farsightedness)
Farsightedness, or hyperopia, occurs when distance vision is typically clear, but close objects appear blurry. This condition develops when the eyeball is shorter than average from front to back or when the cornea has too little curvature. As a result, light focuses behind the retina rather than directly on it.
Mild farsightedness may not require correction. However, moderate to severe hyperopia can be treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, LASIK, or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Your eye care provider will help determine the best treatment option for your visual needs.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism is caused by an uneven or irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, which can result in blurred or distorted vision at both near and far distances. Common symptoms may include squinting, eye strain, headaches, and visual fatigue.
Most people have some degree of astigmatism, which is often present at birth and may be hereditary. In mild cases, treatment may not be necessary but can still improve visual comfort. Moderate to severe astigmatism is commonly treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery such as LASIK.
Presbyopia (Aging Eyes)
Presbyopia is an age-related condition in which the natural lens of the eye gradually loses flexibility, making it more difficult to focus on close objects. Distance vision usually remains unaffected.
Presbyopia is a normal part of aging and cannot be prevented by diet, lifestyle, or visual habits. However, it is highly treatable with options such as progressive lenses, bifocals, reading glasses, or contact lenses.
